Biography
Whitly Stokes (1830-1909), Irish scholar and barrister, was educated at St. Columba's College and Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated with a BA in 1851. After practicing law in London for seven years, he moved to India where he was appointed to the viceroy's council and drafted codes on civil and criminal procedure, as well as publishing nine books on Celtic studies. Stokes is most famous for being a Celtic scholar and he was learned in Irish, Breton, and Cornish texts. He was an original fellow of the British Academy, an honourary fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, and foreign associate of the Institut de France, as well as being made a CSI and CIE. He died at his London home in 1909.
