Letters mostly to Clark, with some to his wife Frances Clark (d.1908), Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873) and others, mainly routine in nature, and collected for their autograph value. Another volume, containing letters of scientists, was not acquired. The original numbering in each volume has been retained; in this catalogue the letters are grouped by subject.

He selected subjects, etc., for windows and other ornaments of chapel, but cannot remember details; G.H. Rendall was going to write a book on the windows; Lightfoot gave him notes; Westcott took a large part, and is in Cambridge, and can be consulted

Most of the letters are replies to appeals by Porter for contributions to a memorial to Henry Fawcett and the cost of portraits of the seventh Duke of Devonshire, J.B. Lightfoot and B.F. Westcott; or replies to his invitations to a dinner in honour of recipients of honorary degrees (1883), and the celebration of the six hundredth anniversary of the foundation of Peterhouse (1884); or concern an address of support from members of Senate to the Liberal Unionist leadership (1887).
