Biography

William Prideaux Courtney (1845-1913) was born in Penzance on 26 April 1845, and educated at Penzance Grammar School and the City of London School. He joined the office of Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1865, and became Principal Clerk in the Pay Office. Courtney contributed to the Dictionary of national biography, and the latter volumes of the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He also wrote books on a variety of subjects, and contributed to newspapers and periodicals. He retired in 1892, and died on 14 November 1913.
