Biography
The Spanish priest Father Emmanuele Aponte was employed by Francis Hare-Naylor (1753-1815) in 1797 to tutor his eldest son Francis. Hare-Naylor had married Georgiana Shipley in 1783, and settled in northern Italy, where his four sons were born. He returned to England on the death of his father in 1797, entrusting three of his children, including Francis, to the care of Clotilda Tambroni and Aponte. Aponte taught Francis, then 11 years of age, to read and write Greek. This arrangement lasted until 1799, when the Hare-Naylors returned to Italy to fetch their children back to England.
