Biography

Henry Woods was born at Cottenham, near Cambridge, the son of a farmer, on 18 December 1868. He was admitted sizar at St. John's College in October 1887, took firsts in both parts of the Natural Sciences Tripos, and was awarded a Harkness scholarship in 1890. From 1892 to 1899 he was Demonstrator in Palaeontology, and was then appointed University Lecturer in Palaeozoology. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1916; and received the Lyell and Wollaston medals of the Geological Society in 1918 and 1940 respectively. He produced a number of monographs, including studies of the Cretaceous fauna of England, Pondoland, Northern Nigeria and New Zealand. In 1910 he married Ethel Gertrude, daughter of the great Early English scholar, Professor W.W. Skeat. He retired from his lectureship in 1934, and died on 4 April 1952.
