Smedley, Edward Arthur, 1804-1890 (clergyman)
Biography
Edward Arthur Smedley (1804-1890) was born in Westminster on 20 July 1804. He was educated at Westminster School, before entering Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1822 (B.A., 1826; M.A., 1829). He was chaplain of Trinity, 1830-1836, and usher at Westminster School, 1828-1836. Smedley was ordained deacon in 1829, and priest in 1830, and was vicar of Chesterton, Cambridgeshire, 1836-1873. He died at Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, on 22 July 1890. Charles Knowles was born in Leicestershire, and entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 1850 (B.A., 1854; M.A., 1857), where he became a fellow in 1855. He was ordained deacon in 1854, and priest in 1855. Knowles was curate of St Peter's, Forsbrook, Staffordshire, 1854-1856, curate of St Luke's, Leek, 1857-1861, curate of St Luke's, Cambridge, 1862-1865, and rector of Winteringham, Lincolnshire, 1866-1898. He died on 26 December 1898.
