Biography

John Robert Seeley (1834-1895), historian and essayist, was born in London on 10 September 1834. He attended the City of London School and Christ's College, Cambridge (B.A., 1857), where he became a Fellow and Lecturer in Classics. He was appointed Chief Classical Assistant at the City of London School in 1859, and Professor of Latin at University College, London, in 1863. He was Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University, 1869-1895, and became a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College in 1882. He died in Cambridge on 13 January 1895. Seeley employed his sister Ada Seeley as a research assistant between 1885 and 1887, transcribing manuscripts at the British Museum and Public Record Office (P.R.O.).
