Campbell, Sir George, 1824-1892 (Knight, MP and colonial administrator)
Biography
Sir George Campbell (1824-92), knight, MP and colonial administrator, was educated at Madras College, St Andrews, followed by two sessions at St Andrews University, before family connections obtained a nomination for the East India Company. Starting in June 1843 as assistant magistrate and collector at Budaun, Rohilkhand, in the North-Western Provinces, George Campbell was promoted to be joint magistrate of Moradabad in 1845. Early in 1855 he was made commissioner of customs for northern India and acted as assistant to John Russell Colvin, the lieutenant-governor and later in the year he became commissioner of the Cis-Sutlej states. He was appointed chief commissioner of the Central Provinces in 1867. Campbell died at the Continental Hotel, Cairo, from the effects of influenza, on 18 February 1892, and was buried in the British protestant cemetery there.
