Dopping, Anthony, 1643-1697 (Church of Ireland bishop of Meath)
Biography
Anthony Dopping (1643-1697), bishop of Kildare and Meath, and Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, began his education at St. Patrick's Catholic school and continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated BA in 1660 and MA in 1662. After graduating from college, he was appointed to the bishopric of Kildare (1679) and Meath (1682), as well as being elected vice-chancellor of Trinity College (also 1682) and securing a seat in the House of Lords. Dopping was criticized widely for changing allegiance for the monarch, as well as Catholic versus Protestant doctrines, and was eventually suspended from the privy council for voicing his opinion too loudly (although he was restored three years later). He was also very committed to reform of the Irish church, including the act of evangelizing the Catholic Irish through the Irish language. Dopping died in Dublin in 1697.
