Biography

Richard Caulfield (1823-87), librarian and antiquary, was born in Cork on 23 April 1823. He was educated by Dr Edward Browne at the Bandon endowed school. He was admitted a pensioner at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1841, and graduated BA in 1845, LLB in 1864, and LLD in 1866. In 1864 he became librarian of the Royal Cork Institution, and in 1876 was appointed librarian to the Queen's College, Cork. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1862, and in 1882 was made an honorary member of the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid. He was a member for many years of the Société des Antiquaires of Normandy, and an active member of the committee for rebuilding Cork Cathedral. In 1845 he had been elected a freeman of Cork city. In 1855 he was made a council member of the Cork Cuvierian Society. He died at the Royal Cork Institution on 3 February 1887, and was buried in the churchyard of Douglas, co. Cork.
