Clarges, Sir Thomas, c.1618-1695 (Knight and politican)
Biography
Sir Thomas Clarges (c.1618-95), knight and politician, was drawn into General George Monck's activities as one of Cromwell's senior commanders, and during Monck's command in Scotland became his principal agent in London. He became a member of the protectorate parliament for Sutherland and Ross and Cromarty. In February 1660, Clarges was appointed commissary-general of the musters, and the following month was made clerk of the hanaper. He returned to England and to the House of Commons at a by-election for Southwark in March 1666 and for the rest of his career was a tireless parliamentarian. He died on 4 October 1695 at his house in Piccadilly.
