Biography

Joseph Woodfall Ebsworth (1824-1908), literary editor and artist, was born on 2 September 1824 in Lambeth, Surrey. After studying art in Edinburgh he became chief artist to a firm of Manchester lithographers in 1848, but soon moved to Glasgow, where he became a master at the school of design. He entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1860 (B.A., 1864; M.A., 1867), and was a curate from 1864 to 1871, and vicar of Molash, Kent, 1871-1894. Ebsworth published old English poems and ballads. He died on 7 June 1908 at Ashford, Kent.
