Ellicott, Charles John, 1819-1905 (Bishop of Gloucester)

Biography

Charles John Ellicott (1819-1905), Bishop of Gloucester, was born at Whitwell in Rutland on 25 April 1819. He was educated at grammar schools in Stamford and Oakham and proceeded to St John's College, Cambridge, in 1837, and gained the Bell University scholarship in 1838. He received his MA in 1844, and was elected to a Platt fellowship at his own college in 1845. He was made a deacon in 1846 and ordained priest in 1847. In 1858 Ellicott left Pilton to succeed Richard Chenevix Trench as professor of New Testament at King's College, London and in 1859 he gave the Hulsean lectures at Cambridge University. In 1861 Ellicott was made dean of Exeter and was made Bishop of Gloucester in 1863. Ellicott resigned from office on Lady day 1905 and died on 15 October 1905 at Trisco, Birchington, Kent, where he was buried on 21 October.

Most of the letters are replies to appeals by Porter for contributions to a memorial to Henry Fawcett and the cost of portraits of the seventh Duke of Devonshire, J.B. Lightfoot and B.F. Westcott; or replies to his invitations to a dinner in honour of recipients of honorary degrees (1883), and the celebration of the six hundredth anniversary of the foundation of Peterhouse (1884); or concern an address of support from members of Senate to the Liberal Unionist leadership (1887).
