Biography

Sir Charles Harding Firth (1857-1936), knight and historian, was born at Broom Spring House, Wilkinson Street, Ecclesall, Bierlow, Yorkshire, on 16 March 1857. In 1875 he entered New College, Oxford, to read history but in 1876 he moved on a scholarship to Balliol. Before graduating in 1878, with a first in modern history, he won the Stanhope history prize with an essay on the Marquess Wellesley. From 1885 on Firth contributed copiously to the Dictionary of National Biography, writing over 200 entries for often comparatively obscure individuals. He died on 19 February 1936 at the Acland Nursing Home, 25 Banbury Road, Oxford, and was buried on 21 February at Wolvercote.
