Biography

Sir Herbert George Fordham (1854-1929), knight and writer on cartography, was born at Odsey on 9 May 1854. He was educated at home, at private schools, and at University College, London, where he early showed an ability for scientific research, and became a member of the Geological Society at nineteen and a life member of the British Association at twenty-one. Between 1874 and 1892 he published several papers on the geology, natural history, and botany of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. In 1882 Fordham left the family business, and in 1885 was called to the bar by the Inner Temple, joining the south-eastern circuit. For his pioneering books and articles he was awarded the gold medal of the Brussels Geographical Society in 1929. Fordham died in a nursing home in Cambridge on 20 February 1929.
