Biography

Joseph Gillow (1850-1921), biographical lexicographer and genealogist, was born on 5 October 1850 at Frenchwood House, Preston, Lancashire. Gillow was educated at Sedgley Park, near Wolverhampton (1862-3), and St Cuthbert's College, Ushaw (1864-6). He produced the Biographical and Bibliographical Dictionary of the English Catholics in five volumes - volume one appearing in 1885. he died on 17 March 1921.
