Biography

Sir Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant-Duff (1829-1906), knight, statesman and author, was born at Eden, Aberdeenshire, on 21 February 1829. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, the Grange School, Sunderland, and at Balliol College, Oxford (1847-50). He graduated BA in 1850 with a second class in literae humaniores, and proceeded MA in 1853. On leaving Oxford he settled in London and read for the bar, and in 1854 passed with honours in the LLB examination of London University. In December 1857 Grant-Duff succeeded George Skene Duff as the Liberal MP for Elgin burghs, holding the seat until 1881, when he was appointed governor of Madras. He died at his London house, 11 Chelsea Embankment, on 12 January 1906.
