Biography

William Maunsell Hennessy (1828/9-89), linguistic scholar, was born at Castlegregory, co. Kerry, and was educated privately. He had a post in the office of inspectors of lunatic asylums from 1856 to 1868 when, on the establishment of the Public Record Office (PRO) in Dublin, he was appointed to the senior staff as a first-class clerk. He was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy and was Todd professor in the academy for 1882-4. In April 1887 he was promoted to assistant deputy keeper in the PRO. Hennessy died, aged sixty, on Sunday 13 January 1889, at his home, 71 Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin.
