Hind, Arthur Magyer, 1880-1957 (art historian)

Biography

Arthur Magyer Hind (1880-1957), art historian and Keeper of Prints and Drawings, British Museum (1933-45), was born at Waterloo Street, Horninglow, Burton upon Trent, on 26 August 1880. He was educated at the City of London School and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he obtained first-class honours in part one of the classical tripos of 1902. In 1903 he entered the department of prints and drawings of the British Museum as an assistant, the equivalent of the later assistant keeper. In 1933 Hind succeeded Laurence Binyon as keeper of the department of prints and drawings and retired in 1945. Hind died at St Andrew's Nursing Home, Henley-on-Thames, on 22 May 1957.
