Biography

Geoffrey Dudley Hobson (1882-1949), historian of bookbindings, was born on 17 March 1882 at Bromborough, Cheshire. Hobson was educated at Harrow School (1896-1900) and at University College, Oxford, where he was placed in the first class of the honours list in modern history in 1903. In 1908 he was part of a group led by Montague Barlow which purchased the old-established auctioneering firm of Sotheby, Wilkinson, and Hodge. He died at his residence at 11 Chelsea Park Gardens, Chelsea, London, on 5 January 1949.
