Biography

Richard Jenkyns (1782-1854), Master of Balliol, Oxford, and Dean of Wells, was born at Evercreech, Somerset. He was admitted as a commoner to Balliol College, Oxford, in 1800, and was soon afterwards elected scholar. He graduated BA in 1804, MA in 1806, and BD and DD in 1819, and acted as public examiner in 1811-12. He was appointed tutor of his college in 1813, bursar in 1814, and on 23 April 1819 was elected master. Jenkyns held his father's living at Evercreech from 1821 to 1825, succeeding also to his rectory of Pinder and prebend at Wells, both of which he retained from 1824 to 1845. He died on 6 March 1854 at the master's lodgings, Balliol College, Oxford.
