Biography

Claude Hermann Walter Johns (1857-1920), Assyriologist, was born on 20 February 1857 at Banwell in Somerset and first became a schoolmaster. He was ordained priest in 1888 and became a tutor in St. Peter's Training College for Schoolmasters, Peterborough, as well as curate of St. Botolph's, Helpston (1887-88), and of St. John's, Peterborough (1888-91). In 1892 he became rector of St. Botolph's, Cambridge and was also chaplain of Queen's College 1893-1901. From 1897 he was lecturer in Assyriology in Cambridge University, as well as in King's College, London (from 1902). From 1909-1920 he was Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge where is did much to improve the College's administration and status. Between 1901 and 1914 he published works on cuneiform documents relating the legal system in the Assyrian Empire. He died in 1902.
