Biography

Edward Lyttelton (1855-1942), Headmaster of Eton, was born at Hagley, Worcestershire, 23 July 1855. After attending a dame-school in Brighton, Lyttelton went to Eton College in 1868. He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1874, and left with a second class in the classical tripos, graduating BA, 1878, MA, 1881, BD, 1907, and DD, 1912. Lyttelton was appointed as assistant master at Wellington College in 1880, staying until 1882, and became headmaster of Eton in 1905. He became become dean of Whitelands College, Chelsea, a teacher training college for women, in 1920. He died at his home, the Old Palace, Lincoln, on 26 January 1942.
