McClean, Frank, 1837-1904 (civil engineer and astronomer)
Biography
Frank McClean (1837-1904), civil engineer and astronomer, was born at Glasgow on 13 November 1837. He entered Westminster School in 1850, then proceeded in 1853 to the University of Glasgow, and in 1855 to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he gained a scholarship and from where he graduated twenty-seventh wrangler in 1859. After articled training as an engineer, in 1862 he became a partner in his father's company. McClean permanently distinguished himself as a benefactor of astronomical education. McClean died in Brussels on 8 November 1904.
