Biography
William Wellesley-Pole (1763-1845), 3rd Earl of Mornington and statesman, was born at Dangan Castle, co. Meath, on 20 May 1763. From 1783 to 1790 he sat for Trim, the Wesley family seat in the Irish parliament. He sat for East Looe until 1795 and then for Queen's county from 1801 to 1821. On 24 June 1807 he became secretary to the Admiralty, and in October 1809 he was appointed by Perceval chief secretary for Ireland and was sworn of the privy council. He resigned the chief secretaryship and the chancellorship of the Irish exchequer in August 1812 and he remained out of government until 28 September 1814, when he was appointed master of the Royal Mint and given a seat in his cabinet. On 17 July 1821, Pole was created a peer of the United Kingdom with the title of Baron Maryborough. He died on 22 February 1845 in Grosvenor Square, London, and was buried in Grosvenor Chapel, Audley Street.
