Biography
John Green (1706-79), Bishop of Lincoln, was born at Beverley, Yorkshire. He was admitted as a sizar at St John's College, Cambridge, on 10 June 1724 from which he graduated with a BA (1728), an MA (1731), a BD (1739), and a DD (1749). He was also awarded a fellowship in 1730 which he held until 1750. In 1729 he served as an usher at the Lichfield grammar school before being ordained priest by the bishop of Lincoln in 1731 and taking up the position of vicar of Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, in the same year. Further preferment followed after Green became domestic chaplain to Charles, duke of Somerset, the chancellor of the University of Cambridge, in 1744. In 1747 the duke presented him to the rectory of Borough Green near Newmarket and in 1749 Green also obtained the living of Barrow in Suffolk by right of being the senior fellow in orders at St John's College. In 1748 Green was appointed to the university's most senior chair, the regius professorship of divinity. In 1756 Green was promoted to the deanery of Lincoln and resigned the professorship of divinity. However, he continued his connection with the university by serving as vice-chancellor in 1756-7. Green died at Bath in 1779.
