Biography
Thomas Pelham-Holles (1693-1768), 1st Duke of Newcastle and statesman, was born in Sussex on 21 July 1693. After attending Westminster School, young Thomas matriculated in 1709 at Clare College, Cambridge. In late 1714 the newly arrived George I appointed him to the lord lieutenancies of Middlesex and Nottinghamshire and raised him in the peerage with the titles of Viscount Houghton and earl of Clare. On 13 April 1717 took the oath of office to become lord chamberlain. He was foreign minster 1730-39 and 1748-54, defence minister 1739-48, prime minister 1754-56, and minister of finances 1757-62. On 17 November at Newcastle House, he died.
