Biography
Sir Anthony Panizzi (1797-1879), librarian, was born on 16 September 1797 at Brescello in the duchy of Modena (then part of the Cisalpine Republic). After his initial education in Brescello, Panizzi went in 1810 to the grammar school at Reggio nell'Emilia, and from there in 1814 to the University of Parma, where he took his degree in jurisprudence in August 1818. In 1819 he was appointed Amministratore del Commune e della Congregazione di Carità , and also Giudice dell'Annona (roughly the equivalent of town clerk and inspector of weights and measures). He also practised as a lawyer, and in 1821 became inspector of the public schools of Brescello. In February 1828 Panizzi was appointed to the post of Professor of Italian at the University of London. He became the keeper of printed books at the British Museum in 1837 and principal librarian in 1856. Panizzi died at 31 Bloomsbury Square in 1879.
