Biography

Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-91), politician and landowner, was born on 27 June 1846 at Avondale, co. Wicklow. After being rusticated from Cambridge following a brawl, he never returned to complete his degree. In 1874 he became high sheriff of co. Wicklow and was chosen as a member of the synod of the disestablished Church of Ireland. He was elected to the seat of Meath in 1875 and president of the Irish National Land League in 1879. Parnell led the Irish Parliamentary Party as Member of Parliament (MP) through the period of Parliamentary nationalism in Ireland between 1875 and his death in 1891. On 6 October 1891, he died at 10 Walsingham Terrace, Brighton.
