Biography

Alfred Newton (1829-1907), zoologist, was born in Geneva on 11 June 1829, and entered Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 1848 (B.A., 1853). He carried out ornithological research work with the ornithologist John Woolley in Lapland (1855) and Iceland (1858), and independently in the West Indies (1857) and Spitsbergen (1864). In 1866 he became Professor of Zoology at Cambridge University, where he pioneered zoological study. He was made Fellow of the Royal Society in 1870. Newton died on 7 June 1907.
