Biography
Henry Boyd (c.1831-1922), Principal of Hertford College Oxford, was born in Holborn, London, on 26 February 1831. Educated at Hackney School, he went as a commoner to Exeter College, Oxford, matriculating in January 1849. He gained a second class in literae humaniores in 1852, the Ellerton theological essay prize in 1853, and the Denyer theological essay prize in 1856 and 1857, and graduated BA (1852), MA (1857), and BD and DD (1879). He was ordained in 1854 to the curacy of Belleau in Lincolnshire and in 1856 moved to that of Probus, near Truro, Cornwall. From 1863 to 1874 Boyd was perpetual curate of St Mark's, Victoria Docks, Plaistow, in east London. In March 1877, Boyd was appointed principal of the college, and from then until his death, forty-five years later, the welfare of Hertford was his constant care.
