Biography

William Conyngham Plunket (1828-97), 4th Baron Plunket and Archbishop of Dublin, was born at 30 Upper Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin, on 26 August 1828. In 1842 he was sent to Cheltenham College and graduated BA in 1853 and received the degrees of BD and DD in 1876 from Trinity College, Dublin. He became chaplain and private secretary to his uncle Thomas, second Baron Plunket, then bishop of Tuam, and in the following year was appointed rector of the united parishes of Kilmoylan and Cummer in that diocese. He was elected bishop of Meath and was consecrated at Armagh on 10 December 1876. In 1884 Plunket was elected archbishop of the united dioceses of Dublin, Glendalough, and Kildare. Plunket died at the palace, St Stephen's Green, Dublin, on 1 April 1897.
