Biography

John Romilly (1802-74), 1st Baron Romilly and Master of the Rolls, was born in London on 10 January 1802. He went to school in London and on 26 October 1818 was admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became a wrangler and graduated BA in 1823 and MA in 1826. Entering Gray's Inn on 26 January 1818, he practised as an equity draftsman and conveyancer before being called to the bar on 26 June 1827. He was a bencher of his inn from 1843 and treasurer in 1846. He was appointed solicitor-general by Lord John Russell on 29 March 1848, knighted on 17 May, and made attorney-general in July 1850. On 28 March 1851 he was appointed master of the rolls by the Russell ministry, and was sworn of the privy council the following month. He died, at his London house in Cromwell Road, Kensington, on 23 December 1874.
