Biography

Walter Rye (1843-1929), Norfolk antiquary, was born on 31 October 1843 at 14 King's Parade, Chelsea. Rye left school at fourteen, and entered his father's office at 16 Golden Square, Westminster, as a clerk, continuing his studies with evening classes at King's College, before becoming articled to his father in June 1861, and qualifying as a solicitor in May 1866. In 1908-9 he was mayor of Norwich and produced over eighty works on Norfolk local history and topography, and bequeathed his collection of historic manuscripts to the county library. He was secretary of the London athletic club and the Thames Hare and Hounds, as well as the athletics correspondent of the Sporting Gazette. Rye died at his home, 66 Clarendon Road, Norwich, on 24 February 1929.
