Biography

Fritz Saxl (1890-1948), historian and director of Warburg Institute, was born in Vienna, on 8 January 1890. Educated at the Maximilian Gymnasium in Vienna and at the universities of Vienna and Berlin, he began his scholarly career with research into the authenticity and dating of Rembrandt's drawings; this work was published in 1912. In 1911 he had been awarded a scholarship at the Oesterreichisches Historisches Institut in Rome, and while there he began to compile his Catalogue of Astrological and Mythological Illuminated Manuscripts of the Latin Middle Ages. From 1914 to 1918 Saxl served as a first lieutenant in the Austrian army on the Italian front, but was called back to Hamburg to take over the Warburg Institute. Saxl died on 22 March 1948, at his home, 162 East Dulwich Grove, Dulwich.
