Biography

Archibald Henry Sayce (1845-1933), orientalist, comparative philologist and Egyptologist, was born at Shirehampton, near Bristol, on 25 September 1845. In 1865 Sayce went to university at Queen's College in Oxford. In 1869, shortly after taking his BA degree, he was elected a fellow and classical lecturer at Queen's College, Oxford. In 1870 he became a college tutor, and was also ordained. In the early 1870s Sayce was a regular weekly contributor to The Times and the New York Independent and in 1876, after taking up Indo-Germanic Philology, he became deputy professor of comparative philology. Sayce died at Bath on 4 February 1933.
