Biography
Sir William Bate Hardy (1864-1934), knight and biologist, was born at Erdington, Warwickshire, on 6 April 1864. He was educated at Framlingham College and entered Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in 1884. He was elected scholar in 1885 and was awarded a first class in the natural sciences tripos (zoology) in 1888. He was elected a fellow of the college in 1892, and was a tutor from 1900 to 1918. Hardy was a lecturer in histology within the department of physiology at Cambridge from 1898 to 1929.
