Biography

Robert Needham Cust (1821-1909), orientalist, was educated at Eton College, before joining the Indian Civil Service, and administering the Hoshiarpur and Ambala districts. He was called to the bar in 1857. In 1861 he became judicial commissioner of Amritsar, and in 1864 he joined the legislative council. He retired from the I.C.S. in 1867. Cust studied oriental languages, and published works on oriental philology and religion. He was secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1878-1899.
