Biography
Sir Richard Runciman Terry (1864-1938), choirmaster and music scholar, was born on 3 January 1864 at Ellington, Northumberland. He spent a year in Oxford (1887-8) and two years in Cambridge, but left without completing his degree in 1890. He had various teaching posts, including St John's School, Leatherhead, and Downside School, Somerset. On the strength of his choral work at Downside, Terry was appointed by Cardinal Vaughan to direct the new choir of Westminster Cathedral, taking up the post early in 1902. He died in the Princess Beatrice Hospital, Kensington, London, on 18 April 1938.
