Biography

Ramsay Heatley Traquair (1840-1912), zoologist, was born on 30 July 1840 at the old manse, Rhynd, Perthshire. He was educated at Edinburgh University (1857-62) and was demonstrator in anatomy at Edinburgh until 1866 when he became professor at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester. In 1867 he became professor of zoology at the Royal College of Science, Dublin. In 1873 he was appointed as first keeper of natural history at the Museum of Science and Art (later the Royal Museum) in Edinburgh. He died at his home, The Bush, Spylaw Bank Road, Colinton, Edinburgh, on 22 November 1912.
