Biography

Sir George Frederic Warner (1845-1936), knight and archivist, was born at Winchester on 7 April 1845. Warner was educated at Christ's Hospital and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he became a scholar and obtained a second class in the classical tripos of 1868. In 1871 he entered the department of manuscripts in the British Museum, where he served for forty years: he became assistant keeper in 1888 and keeper and Egerton librarian in 1904. Warner's special interests were in palaeography and illuminated manuscripts. Warner's most important works of scholarship were his edition of the travels of Sir John Mandeville (The Buke of John Maundeuill, 1889) and The Libelle of Englyshe Polycye (1926). He died on 17 January 1936 at Rowanhurst, Mayfield Road, Weybridge, Surrey.
