Biography
Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), 1st Duke of Wellington, army officer and prime minister, was born in Dublin in May 1769. Arthur joined the army in 1787, fighting against the French in Flanders, and in 1796 was posted to India. On returning to England, he was knighted, made a Member of Parliament and appointed chief secretary for Ireland. In 1808, he returned to the army and took control of the Allied forces fighting Napoleon's army in Spain and defeated Napoleon there and at the Battle of Waterloo. In 1818, Wellington returned to politics, gaining a post in the Conservative government and in 1828, he reluctantly accepted the post of Prime Minister. He retired in 1846 and died on 14 September 1852.
