Biography

John Edward Bickersteth Mayor (1825-1910), classical scholar and divine, was educated at Christ's Hospital, Shrewsbury, and St John's College, Cambridge, of which he became a fellow in 1849. He was master at Marlborough, 1849-1853, and classical tutor at St John's from 1853, and published Baker's History of St John's College (2 vols.) in 1869. Ecclesiastical history, in collaboration with J.R. Lumby (1878); and edited works by Cicero, Homer, Pliny, and Quintilian. His other publications include Mayor was Cambridge University Librarian, 1864-1867, and in 1872 was made Professor of Latin at the university, a position he held until his death. He published biographies of Nicholas Ferrar (1855), Matthew Robinson (1856), Ambrose Benwicke (1870), and William Bedell (1870); edited books iii and iv of Bede's A biography of Latin literature (1875), A first Greek reader (1868), and First German reader (1910).
