Biography

William Sancroft (1617-1693), Archbishop of Canterbury and Master of Emmanuel College, was born at Fressingfield, Suffolk and was educated at the grammar school of Bury St Edmunds, and proceeded to graduate BA (1637) and MA (1641) from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. A Church of England loyalist and fervent supporter of Charles II, and later James II, he was appointed Master of Emmanuel College, dean of York, dean of St. Paul's, and Archbishop of Canterbury. When William of Orange expelled James II from the throne, Sancroft refused to transfer his allegiance to the new monarchy and was ultimately suspended and deprived of this position in 1690 with five bishops and approximately 400 clergy in England. He lived out his final days at Fressingfield.
