Biography

Charles Edward Sayle (1864-1924) was born in Cambridge on 6 December 1864. He entered New College, Oxford, in 1883 (B.A., 1887; M.A., 1890), and St John's College, Cambridge in 1890. He joined the staff of the University Library in 1893, and was assistant librarian, 1910-1924. He died on 4 July 1924.

Scope and Contents A handlist in three volumes of manuscripts in part of the Two-Letter classmark sequence (Dd-Kk).Charles Sayle’s work on producing descriptions of medieval manuscripts at Cambridge University Library appears to have ceased in late 1920 (see UA ULIB 7/3/72). According to the date inscribed in the first volume, he then began compiling a summary handlist of manuscripts (encompassing both medieval and post-medieval items) in the Two-Letter classmark sequence from 30 November 1920.
