Biography
William Parsons (1800-67), 3rd Earl of Rosse, was born on 17 June 1800 in York. He entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1819, and transferred to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he matriculated in February 1821. From 1821 until 1834 he was member of parliament for King's county and was made lord lieutenant of the county in 1831 and colonel of its militia in 1836. He constructed a Newtonian reflector with a 6 ft aperture and a 4 ton mirror known as 'the monster telescope' or 'Leviathan of Parsonstown' and was completed in 1844. In 1845 Rosse was elected an Irish representative peer and sat in the House of Lords in the Conservative interest. Rosse died on 31 October 1867.
