William Stukeley (1687-1765), antiquary and natural philosopher, proposed a new palace for George III, when after his marriage to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1761) St. James's Palace was thought not large or magnificent enough. Several schemes for a new Palace were proposed. Stukeley proposed a site behind Buckingham House. King George however rejected all schemes, bought Buckingham House and enlarged it.
