Biography
John Couch Adams (1819-1892) was born on 5 June 1819 at Lidcot, Cornwall. He entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1839, and became a fellow and tutor after graduating in 1843. Thereafter, he was a fellow of Pembroke College from 1853 until his death. Adams discovered the planet Neptune while carrying out astronomical observations during 1841-1845, and deposited his results with the Royal Greenwich Observatory. He was Professor of Mathematics at the University of St Andrew's, 1858-1859, and became Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at Cambridge University in 1858. He was appointed Director of the Cambridge Observatory in 1861, and was President of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1851-1853 and 1874-1876. He died on 21 January 1892.
