Biography

Herbert, William (1718-1795), bibliographer and printseller, was born to Thomas Herbert and his wife, Sarah, at Southwark. On his return from a voyage to India, the East India Company paid for plans of settlements he had drawn while there. In 1749, Herbert set up in one of the new houses along London Bridge as a seller and publisher of maps, prints, and charts. His business moved two more times before he retired in 1776. His collection of manuscripts and books totalled over one thousand upon his death, which was sold by his nephew to various libraries globally. Herbert died in his home at Cheshunt in 1795 and buried in Cheshunt churchyard.

Comprises accounts of the printers Richard Pinson to Robert Wyer (fos 42-274). These are preceded by lists of books sent to Isaac Herbert (fos 1-35), advertisement (fos 36, 37), and lists of errata (fos 38-41).
