Biography
James Bentham (1709-94), antiquary and Church of England clergyman, was educated at Ely grammar school (c.1718-1726) and Trinity College, Cambridge (1727-31). Bentham was ordained priest on 20 May 1733. He became vicar of Stapleford, Cambridgeshire, in 1733, a living which he resigned in 1736 in favour of a minor canonry at Ely, which henceforth remained his home, despite later preferments in Norfolk and Bedfordshire. Bentham died at Ely on 17 November 1794, aged eighty-five, and was buried in Ely Cathedral on 22 November.
